Buckeye Player Profile - Lloyd Davenport
Lloyd Davenport did not play for the Cleveland Buckeyes as long as
the other players in this profile. His story is interesting and is part of
major league baseball's history so I added his story.
Davenport was born in New Orleans on October 28, 1911. He was a
left handed outfielder. He started his career in 1935 with the Philadelphia
Stars of the Negro National League. He didn't play well in Philadelphia
and moved on to play with the Cincinnati Tigers in 1937 where under the
guidance of player manager, Ted "Double Duty" Radcliffe, Davenport's
hitting improved and he would appear in 5 All Star Games including the
1945 All Star Game when he played for the Buckeyes.
What makes Davenport's story interesting is that in 1945, the
Mexican League offered numerous Negro League players and Cuban players
in the U.S. more money than what they were getting paid and Davenport
left the Buckeyes in the middle of their 1945 Championship season
to play for Tecolotes de Nuevo Laredo in the Mexican League. He would play
in the Mexican League through 1950.
In 1946, the Mexican League teams would offer more money to many
Major League players to play in Mexico and 22 major league players took
the money offered and continued their career in the Mexican League.
According to Wikipedia, Davenport played for two teams after playing
in Mexico. The Elmwood Giants in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1951 and the
Danville (Ill) Dans in 1953 in the Mississippi-Ohio Valley League.
Davenport passed away on September 1, 1985 at the age of 73.
His statistics are listed below although his Negro League numbers are
incomplete due to a lack of official Negro League statistics.
