1945 World Series Game Champions

Shibe Park, Philadelphia - September 20, 1945

After the Buckeyes won the first three games
of the World Series, both teams traveled to Philadelphia
for Game Four at Shibe Park.
Right hander, Frank Carswell, started for the
Buckeyes against Ray Brown, right hander, for the
  Homestead Grays.
The Buckeyes loaded the bases in the first with no
outs and scored two when Parnell hit into an error
by Grays' second baseman, Bozo Jackson.
Frank Carswell pitched a four hit shut out and the
Buckeyes were World Series champions of 1945.
One of the highlights of the game was when Sam
Jethroe made a great catch in the outfield and got hurt
running into the wall. Buckeye's General Manager,
Dr. Wilbur Hayes, ran out to assist Jethroe but while
running out, he got a charley horse and both he and
Jethroe had to be tended to by another doctor.
It was also reported that Philadelphia fans would
not throw back foul balls hit into the stands.
You might think the Buckeyes would go out and
celebrate after winning the World Series but they had a
second game to play that evening, an exhibition game
against the Philadelphia Stars, who finished 4th in the
Negro National League that year. The Buckeyes won that
game too, 4-1.
The Buckeyes probably celebrated that evening but
the season wasn't over. Games 6 and 7 were still to be
played but they would be exhbition games.
