Jackie Robinson Comes to Cleveland

Before he was the first African-American to play in the major
leagues, Jackie Robinson played shortstop in 1945 for the Kansas
City Monarchs. He is pictured here in his Monarchs uniform.
It appears the Monarchs played just one game in Cleveland
against the Buckeyes that year on July 24th.
Satchel Paige pitched for the Monarchs and lost 3-2 to the
Buckeyes. Pitching for the Buckeyes that day was Eugene Bremer.
However, Cleveland fans were treated to a Home Run by Jackie
Robinson in the 9th inning. The Buckeyes won all six games they
played that year against the Monarchs.
