1945 Negro League World Series Game One

Municipal Stadium, Cleveland, Ohio - September 13, 1945

Game One of the Series was played before
6,500 fans at Cleveland's Municipal Stadium featuring
Buckeyes' Willie Jefferson pitching against the
Grays' Roy Welmaker. Both teams were shutout until
the home half of the seventh inning.
The Buckeyes broke the scoring drought
when Quincey Trouppe tripled in the 7th and scored
on Johnny Cowans sacrifice fly to take a 1-0 lead.
Archie Ware scored the second run for the Buckeyes
after he singled in the 8th, went to second on a walk
and scored on Willie Grace's single.
The Homestead Grays threatened in the top of the
9th when Josh Gibson (left) hit a one out single to
score a run. It was his first hit of the game.
Gray's shortstop, Sam Bankhead would bounce
into a double play to end the game and the
Buckeyes took a 1-0 Series lead.
Believe it or not, both teams would travel to
Dayton for an exhibition game on September 14th
before coming back to Cleveland for Game Two
