On September 2, 1945, the Buckeyes honor their General Manager, Wilbur
Hayes, by beating the Chicago American Giants twice, 6-2 and 10-0. before
5,000 fans at League Park. A fans committee gave Hayes a certificate for a
1946 new car. New cars were scarce as the factories were changing from
providing war machinery back to peacetime production.
The certificate was presented to Hayes by Judge Perry Jackson, Cleveland
municipal court judge who was the first African American judge in Ohio. The
big hit in the first game was an inside-the-park Home Run by Avelino
Canizares (pictured left).
By virtue of winning the second half of the season as well as the first
half, the Buckeyes win the Negro American League championship and play
the Homestead Grays, the Negro National League champions.
